Export Links

Exporting format options include Internet Explorer Favorites, Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape Bookmarks, HTML Thumbnail Links Page, HTML Thumbnail Pages in Folders, and HTML Thumbnail Hierarchy. The "Export" option is located in the File menu.

As with importing, the Internet Explorer Favorites export location is detected automatically, although it can also be set by the user in the Synch tab of the Preferences dialog.

The user must manually locate the bookmarks.htm file when exporting to Firefox, Mozilla, or Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape bookmarks. The default directory for bookmark.htm in older versions of Netscape is "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator" for Netscape Navigator or "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users" followed by your user name for Netscape Communicator. Newer versions of Firefox, Mozilla, and Netscape may save the bookmarks.html file in a folder such as "C:\Documents and Settings\{Windows Username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{Profile Name}", or "C:\Documents and Settings\{Windows Username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\{Profile Name}," or in a subfolder of one of these folders. In order for the Application Data folder to be visible, it may be necessary to enable the "Show hidden files and folders" option in Windows Explorer. This option can be accessed in Windows Explorer by selecting the Tools menu, Folder Options menu item, View tab, and then looking under the Advanced Settings section of the dialog.

The Opera Hotlist bookmarks file ("opera6.adr" for Opera 6 and Opera 7) must also be located manually. The default directory for the Opera Hotlist bookmarks file is "C:\Program Files\Opera", or if individual Opera profiles are enabled, the default directory may be something like "C:\Documents and Settings\{Windows Username}\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile".

The Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape and Opera Hotlist bookmark files will be completely overwritten when exporting. A backup copy of the bookmark file will be made if the "Backup existing bookmarks file prior to export" option is enabled in the Synch tab of the Preferences dialog. When exporting to Internet Explorer favorites, the NetVisualize links will be merged in with the existing favorites, unless the user has enabled the "Delete existing favorites prior to export" option in the Synch tab of the Preferences dialog.

When exporting links, NetVisualize will prompt the user whether to export all links in the file or only the selected links. If the user chooses to export only selected links, all selected links as well as links contained within selected folders will be exported.

If the user chooses to export only the selected links, the order in which the links are exported is determined by the order in which the user selected the links. To select the links in a specific order, hold down the Ctrl key and click with the mouse to select the links one at a time in the desired order. Alternatively, first hold down the Shift key, then click the link that should appear first, and finally click the link that should appear last.

The HTML Thumbnail Links Page is an export option that generates an HTML page that displays link thumbnail images with related link information. The layout of the page can be altered by editing the header, link, and footer template files. NetVisualize uses the template files displayed on the "File" tab in Preferences. The result of the export operation will be an HTML file and a similarly named subfolder that contains the JPEG thumbnail images referenced by the HTML file.

If desired, the HTML Thumbnail Links Page export option can be used to export to text-based file formats other than HTML, such as plain text files (.txt files). To export to other text-based file formats, the default export templates that are installed with the software must be modified, or new templates must be created.

After the HTML Thumbnail Links Page has been exported, the user can then FTP the HTML file and corresponding thumbnail images folder to a website. This is an easy way to maintain a links page on a website or to make it more appealing by adding thumbnail images of the websites that are linked to. To customize the look or layout of the HTML Thumbnail Links Page or to change which fields of information are exported for each link, modify the included export templates or create new templates. It is recommended that any user-customized templates be renamed to have filenames different from the defaults. This will prevent the customized template files from being overwritten (and thus prevent losing the customizations) when new versions of NetVisualize are installed.

The HTML Thumbnail Pages in Folders export option differs from the HTML Thumbnail Links Page export option in that, instead of creating a single HTML page to display all the thumbnail images and link information, a separate HTML page is created for each folder and subfolder, and each of these HTML pages corresponding to a folder interlinks to the pages that correspond to the subfolders of the folder.

The HTML Thumbnail Hierarchy export option differs from the HTML Thumbnail Links Page export option in that, instead of creating a single HTML page to display all the thumbnail images and link information, a separate HTML page is created for each folder and subfolder. These pages do not interlink with each other, but rather a central directory.html page is created that contains a hierarchical directory of all exported folders. This hierarchical directory links directly to each of the HTML pages that are exported for each folder and subfolder.
