Using NetVisualize
NetVisualize is used for organizing and maintaining your favorite links. The following text explains how to add, configure, and organize links, and use some of the thumbnail image features of NetVisualize. These explanations should be enough to get the user started. More explanations of accomplishing specific tasks are available in the How To . . . section of this help file.
Obtaining Help
Context-sensitive help can be obtained from most NetVisualize windows and dialogs by pressing F1. Help is also available by selecting the Contents and Index option from the Help menu.
Context-sensitive help on specific Preferences in the Preferences dialog can be obtained by clicking on the "?" button at the right edge of the Preferences dialog title bar, after which the mouse cursor will temporarily change to a question mark next to a standard pointer, and then clicking on the specific preference option for which help is needed. For example, to obtain help on the "Save changes on exit" preference in the File tab, first click on the "?" button in the upper-right corner of the Preferences dialog (in the title bar), and then click on the "Save changes on exit" check box. A small ToolTip-style popup window will provide details about the preference.
Adding Links
Links to Internet URLs are added by opening a browser, going to the desired site, and clicking the
button on the Toolbar or selecting "Add Link to Current Folder" from the Edit menu on the Menu Bar. Links may also be added by dragging and dropping the URL from the desktop, Windows Explorer, the web browser address bar, or directly from a link on a web page that is displayed in a browser window to the Link Explorer Panel. Shortcuts to files on the user's computer can also be added via drag and drop to the Link Explorer Panel. Selecting "Create New Link" from the right-click popup menu in the Link Explorer Panel offers means to manually add links through the Link Properties dialog window.
Organizing Links
As links are collected, intelligently organizing them becomes increasingly important for later retrieval. Folders and subfolders can be created using the
and
buttons on the toolbar. Separators
may also be added for clarity. Options to create separators are found in the right-click popup menu and the Edit menu.
Thumbnail Features
Thumbnail images for links can be generated by selecting the links that need images and clicking the
button on the Toolbar or selecting the corresponding menu option in the right-click popup menu or Tools menu. Links that have thumbnail images can be viewed in a Thumbnail Directory which displays link's thumbnail images. After selecting links to be included, choose the "Thumbnail Directory" option which is found in the right-click popup menu or the Edit menu. A popup window appears containing the images of the selected links. The image size can be set on the "View" tab of Preferences. Double clicking on an image in the directory will open the link in a browser. Additionally, the right-click popup menu for the directory offers the option to "Jump to Link in Organizer Window." This option will put the NetVisualize window in focus and automatically select the link in the Link Explorer Panel corresponding to the image in the directory.
Link Properties
Link properties can be changed or set by the user. This can be done through the Link Properties dialog window or the main NetVisualize window. Link properties for an existing link are accessed by right-clicking on a link and selecting "Properties" from the popup menu.
Items that may aid in identifying the link later include the link title, notes, and rating. Searches can be limited by contents of each of these items.
From the Link Explorer Panel, links can be renamed by pressing F2 when the link is selected or by selecting the "Rename" option in the right-click popup menu. Notes that describe the link or associate a few key words with the link can be added to the Notes Panel which is located, by default, at the bottom right of the main NetVisualize window. A numerical value can be assigned to the link using the Rating Bar bar on the Details Panel located by default directly below the Link Explorer Panel.
