View Ping, Traceroute, DNS Lookup Information
"Ping URL," "Traceroute to URL," and "DNS Lookup" network utilities are available from link explorer panel popup menu. These commands open a DOS prompt in which the command results are displayed. "Ping URL" can be used to determine if the selected URL is reachable from the user's computer. Traceroute is a TCP/IP utility used to determine the route taken by the user's computer to the URL of the selected link. "DNS Lookup" is used to determine the IP address of a domain name. The command strings corresponding to these utilities can be changed on the "Advanced" tab in Preferences. It is possible to configure these commands to make use of third-party utilities instead of the Windows network utilities that are used by default.
Note that the DNS Lookup command by default is not available on Windows 95/98/Me because these versions of Windows do not generally have the necessary nslookup program installed. The user must manually obtain and install the nslookup program or a third-party equivalent.
